What is Inti Raymi?
The Inti Raymi is a cultural and tourist festival that takes place every year, on June 24, in the city of Cusco, in the Andes Mountains of Peru. This festival seeks to pay respect to the Inca past in Cusco. This festival was also celebrated by the Incas who celebrated the beginning of the cycle of the sun. According to the Cusco chronicler Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, the Incas celebrated the rebirth of the sun in the great ceremony of the Wawa Inti Raymi.
The Wawa Inti Raymi was the Inca festival of a religious nature that took place in the city of Cusco between June 23 and 26, a probable date that purposely coincides with the southern winter solstice. That day the sun was closer to the earth and the Incas knew it.
The Wawa Inti Raymi festival was massive with the participation of the population of Cusco, the sacred capital of the Incas. Various chroniclers agree that this festival was reorganized by Emperor Pachacutec in approximately 1430. It was then that it acquired great importance, with the sacrifice of alpacas, llamas, offerings of precious objects and the participation of the emperor, his entourage, his wife and representatives of all regions.
The chronicles also point out two places where the ceremonies to the sun god were carried out: the temple of the sun (Coricancha) and the Huacaypata (current Main Square of Cusco). The ceremonies included sacrifices of llamas and alpacas, whose meat was used to feed the population. In addition, ceremonies were held with chicha (a drink made from fermented corn).
The Inti Raymi was the most important festival of the Inca calendar along with the Capac Raymi, a celebration also in honor of the sun but which took place in December. Already in the 16th century, with the arrival of the Spanish invaders to Cusco and the establishment of the viceroyalty of Peru, ‘pagans’ practices such as Inti Raymi were punished.
Several centuries later, the first modern Inti Raymi was celebrated on June 24, 1944. This celebration sought to represent the Inca ceremony through the participation of actors and actresses from Cusco. This festival gradually gained fame throughout the world. Today the city of Cusco, every June 24, receives thousands of visitors from all over the planet. June 24 is a non-working holiday throughout the Cusco region.
